Valparaiso, IN – Indiana State Police (ISP) have released initial findings from the investigation of a fatal officer-involved shooting at Fairgrounds Park in Valparaiso on Thursday, April 25, 2024. The confrontation led to the death of 20-year-old Caden Mura, who, according to ISP, initiated gunfire against law enforcement.
Responding to a report of a man brandishing a handgun, officers encountered Mura, matching the suspect description near Butterfield Pavilion. As officers attempted to engage, Mura fled, firing at police personnel and a vehicle. The officers retaliated during the pursuit that continued to a residence on Valparaiso Street, where Mura was ultimately shot after he allegedly raised his handgun again.
Three Valparaiso Police officers and two Porter County Sheriff’s Department officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. The case will be reviewed by the Porter County Prosecutor once the investigation concludes. Statements from both departments have expressed appreciation for community support and highlighted the ongoing complexity of the investigation.
