South Bend, IN – St. Joseph County drivers will face alternating lane closures on U.S. 31/Michigan Street and the U.S. 31/20 bypass starting April 22, as infrastructure improvements continue.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced that the lane closures will affect the stretch between Jackson Road and Ireland Road, including the closure of ramps from westbound U.S. 20 to southbound U.S. 31, and from eastbound U.S. 20 to northbound Michigan Street.

According to INDOT, the closures facilitate bridge painting and deck joint sealing, crucial steps in the ongoing bridge replacement and road lowering project aimed at increasing the height clearance beneath the U.S. 31/20 bypass bridge. The work, part of a larger contract initiated in 2022, is set to continue through late May, with traffic being reduced to one lane in each direction intermittently.

Commuters should expect delays, particularly during peak hours, and are advised to seek alternate routes where possible.
