Kansas City, MO – Severe thunderstorms are forecasted to hit the Kansas City area this afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for significant weather hazards.
According to the National Weather Service, initial storm development is expected around 2 p.m. in northwest Missouri, spreading into north-central Missouri before expanding southward. These storms pose a variety of threats, including hail up to 2 inches in diameter, wind gusts reaching 70 mph, and the potential for a few strong tornadoes. In the morning, scattered storms may develop north of Interstate 70, presenting a limited severe threat with small hail and gusty winds possible if storms develop.
As the storms progress into the evening, they are expected to form a line, with wind gusts in excess of 70 mph, hail the size of half dollars, and brief tornadoes all possible. The storms are anticipated to move east of Highway 63 between 8-10 p.m., posing a continued risk into the nighttime hours.
