KANKAKEE, IL — A routine traffic stop took a surprising turn on Thursday in Kankakee. Police officers intercepted a vehicle along the 1600 block of East Court Street, armed with a search warrant for the SUV. What they uncovered was more than they expected.
Underneath the passenger’s seat, officers stumbled upon a loaded handgun, prompting the immediate arrest of 25-year-old Jeremiah D Johnson, a Kankakee local. Johnson now faces serious charges, including armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
The arrest caught the attention of residents due to the alarming combination of charges, as well as the fact that a four-year-old child was present in the vehicle during the stop. The driver of the SUV and the child were later released.
