BOURBONNAIS – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced Thursday the long-stalled Armour Road bridge construction project has resumed.

After being halted in late 2022 due to unexpected issues with the piers that support the bridge, construction has now resumed, with crews already beginning to work on the pier columns.

According to IDOT Public Information Officer Paul Wappel, the redesign of how the piers will be supported is now complete, with crews set to deliver and set bridge beams into place in early summer. Despite the delay, Bourbonnais officials have confirmed that the state still plans to add 13-foot-wide outside lanes for bicycles and pedestrians.

Originally projected by a case study for completion in 2021, the $5.9 million project began in April 2022, with the westbound lanes demolished on April 18th, 2022. Depending on the redesign, the project could be completed in the fall of this year or spring of 2024. The redesign also required updates to the traffic signal, pavement marking, and signage design plans, to match the 5-lane section west of the project limits.

While IDOT continues to work towards completing the project, residents of the area are advised to continue their patience as the bridge nears completion.
