Springfield, IL – Central Illinois is bracing for scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, with some storms potentially becoming severe.

According to the US National Weather Service, a cold front entering the area overnight will trigger additional showers and thunderstorms, continuing into Wednesday. Heavy rains, particularly east of the Illinois River, may cause flash flooding in urban and poor drainage areas. The risk of large hail and damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph is also present.

By Thursday, conditions are expected to improve, with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s continuing through the weekend.
