Chicago Woman Charged in I-290 Crash That Killed Two Teens Changing Tire

Chicago, IL – A Chicago woman faces charges after a crash on Interstate 290 resulted in the deaths of two Cook County teenagers.

On Saturday, June 2, Illinois State Police responded to a crash westbound on I-290 near Paulina Avenue. Ashanti Gates, 21, allegedly struck a white Toyota on the shoulder with her Hyundai Sonata, killing two occupants, Erik C. Cox and Shaelyn M. Sherwood, both 18. The teens had exited their vehicle to change a flat tire when the incident occurred.

According to ISP, Gates has been charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence and Reckless Homicide. She is currently being held at the Chicago Police Department’s 11th District.
