Chesterton, IN – A collision between a semi-tractor trailer and a pickup truck on Ind. 49 early this morning, Wednesday, Feb. 21, resulted in no injuries but caused a significant diesel spill, according to the Chesterton Fire Department.

The incident occurred around 5:47 a.m. when a pickup truck crossing Ind. 49 from Voyage Blvd. was hit by a northbound semi, the Fire Department reported. The semi swerved into the grassy median to avoid a direct collision, while the pickup ended up at the northeast corner of the intersection.

The crash led to a rupture in one of the semi’s saddle tanks, spilling approximately 50 gallons of diesel into the median. Cleanup efforts began with the Fire Department assisting and notifying Porter County Hazmat of the spill. The scene was cleared by 6:21 a.m.
