Chesterton, IN – Early Friday morning, a semi-tractor trailer accident on I-94 near Chesterton, Indiana, resulted in a hazardous situation and multiple vehicle damages.

According to Porter Fire Department Chief Jay Craig, the crash occurred around 4:16 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Ind. 49 exit. The semi reportedly hit the median wall, causing the trailer to detach and overturn. The tractor crossed the westbound lanes and stopped in a ditch.

The driver, potentially ejected during the crash, was found wandering and later hospitalized with unspecified injuries. Despite initial concerns due to a hazardous materials placard, the semi was carrying auto parts, and no hazardous materials were involved. However, the crash left debris across the road, damaging nearly a dozen vehicles, including six passenger vehicles with flat tires and possibly four other semis.

The Porter County hazmat team, aided by the LaPorte County team, confirmed the absence of hazardous materials. The incident was cleared by the PFD by 6:17 a.m.
