CHESTERTON, IN – A dramatic rescue took place early Saturday when a 64-year-old Pine Township resident, who later admitted to drinking, found himself trapped in an overturned SUV submerged in a ditch on C.R. 1400N.

Swiftly responding to the 4:40 a.m. scene, Chesterton firefighters faced the pressing task of freeing the distressed motorist. Aided by their quick thinking and teamwork, the passenger door was removed, allowing a firefighter to shift the steering wheel and liberate the trapped driver’s legs.

The man, whose blood alcohol content reportedly registered at 0.15 percent, now faces DUI charges. The crash resulted in an estimated $25,000 in damages to his 2015 Ford Escape.
