GRANT PARK – Local firefighters were able to salvage Christmas gifts for a local family that went undamaged in a fire Wednesday night.

According to Grant Park Fire District officials, firefighters were able to salvage the gifts from a home in the 400 block of West Greenwood that would go on to be deemed ‘unlivable’ shortly after being extinguished.

“A small feat as this was a devastating event for this family, but to know they were able to still have a few gifts for their family after such a tragic event goes a long way for them. We couldn’t be more proud of our firefighters for going above and beyond to help this family,” Grant Park Fire officials said in a statement.

Other fire departments as far away as University Park responded to aid the fire that was aided by strong winds at the time. Everyone inside the home was able to get out safely while the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
