ILLINOIS – As the holiday season fast approaches, Illinois is witnessing an unsettling rise in festive decoration thefts.

Recent warnings from the Oak Park Police Department highlight the importance of securing cherished displays to ensure they remain untouched and admired by the community.

To protect their holiday spirit, Illinois residents are taking several measures. The use of locking cords, zip ties, and even bike chains is being advocated to deter potential thieves. Labeling decorations with permanent markers provides an additional layer of security, making it harder for stolen items to be resold.

Homeowners are also turning to technology for help; setting up surveillance cameras, like the Ring system, can capture any suspicious activities and act as a deterrent. Moreover, experts suggest purchasing tracking devices, such as AirTags, and attaching them to valuable outdoor decorations as an extra precaution.
