Gurnee, IL – Loaded Handgun Found at Viking Middle School, Prompting Lockdown

Gurnee, IL – A loaded handgun was discovered at Viking Middle School in Gurnee, IL, leading to a swift lockdown on the morning of Friday, February 23, 2024.

According to the Gurnee Police Department, the incident was first reported around 9:30 AM, and the discovery was made during a meticulous search by law enforcement, including Lake County Sheriff’s K9 units.

The Gurnee Police quickly secured the weapon and took a 13-year-old male student into custody without incident. Following an extensive investigation, officials confirmed no credible threats were made. The student, who has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds, was released to parental custody, and normal school activities resumed shortly after the lockdown was lifted.
