Coal City, Illinois– Residents faced an unexpected challenge Monday morning as high winds caused a significant power outage, leading to an early dismissal of all Unit District #1 schools.

According to district officials the incident began when strong winds knocked down power lines near Coal City High School, disrupting power across the district. ComEd crews were quick to respond, assessing the extensive damage and determining that the repair time necessitated a district-wide closure for safety and operational reasons.

The schools have staggered their dismissal times starting from 11:30 a.m., with the first to close being the Early Childhood Center.

Additionally, all after-school activities for the day have been canceled. While the schools will accommodate students unable to be picked up immediately, parents are advised to stay updated as further information becomes available.
