Illinois Earthquake: 3.1 Magnitude Tremor Near Waltonville Felt Across Midwest

Waltonville, IL — A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Waltonville in Jefferson County, Illinois, early Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). 

The quake, which occurred at 4:10 a.m., was centered 5 kilometers west-northwest of Waltonville, with a depth of 16.6 kilometers. Although there have been no reports of damage, the tremor was felt as far west as Saint Louis, Missouri, throughout the Ozarks, the Shawnee National Forest area, and as far north as Aurora. 

This seismic activity comes just a month after a 3.6 magnitude quake near Standard, Illinois.
