Shorewood, IL – The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced significant overnight lane closures on Interstate 80 in Shorewood, starting Monday, Feb. 26, to facilitate the replacement of the River Road bridge. Motorists are advised to expect disruptions over four nights, with 15-minute full expressway traffic stops.
According to the announcement, eastbound I-80 will see closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, while westbound closures will occur from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. These closures include full traffic stops starting at 1 a.m. each night, not exceeding 15 minutes. The work is set to be completed by Friday, March 1, at 6 a.m.
This $6.3 million project is part of the broader I-80 redesign and rebuild, which includes the replacement of over 30 bridges and several interchange improvements. The entire project, costing approximately $1.3 billion, is expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2028, with some work extending into 2029. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, adhere to posted speed limits, and allow extra travel time through the affected area.
