BOURBONNAIS – Illinois is now the third most searched state to move out of in 2022.
The data come from moving company, moveBuddha, that reports Illinois has the 3rd highest moving outflow behind New Jersey and California.
Key parts of the resort include for every 100 people leaving Illinois, only 42 move in. The top states Illinois residents head for included Florida (15.31%), Texas (11.49%) and California (10.18%).
In Illinois, Schaumburg saw the largest outbound move as 75% of all moves in the city have been outbound. Meanwhile the most popular search for routes in 2020 has been Downers Grove, IL to Ocala, Florida.
Locals leaving the state have cited high cost of living, taxes; and poor city management as the most popular reasons for leaving.
“The main reason that I personally left Illinois was the cost of living,” said Shawn Richards, a former resident of Centreville, Illinois. “For someone hoping to work for smaller businesses, it is a lot to run alone and can be a little bit daunting when the prices rise up. Everything seemed to be more expensive than it was back home…”
Rockford saw the largest population decline in 2022, losing 5.5% of its residents. Meanwhile the largest population decline in the last decade was Nevada, IL, which has lost 84% of its residents.
Just one of the cities in the report, Oak Park, saw a positive inflow of residents. While nearly 58% of all moving searches involving Chicago were moving out related queries.
