Springfield, IL – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has received a substantial federal grant of $7.1 million to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging network across Illinois. According to IDOT, this funding is part of the Federal Highway Administration’s Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility Program. It aligns with Governor JB Pritzker’s ambitious goal of having 1 million EVs on Illinois roads by 2030.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman emphasized the grant’s role in improving the reliability and accessibility of EV charging stations statewide, reflecting Gov. Pritzker’s commitment to modernize transportation and promote green initiatives. The grant will focus on repairing, replacing, or upgrading approximately 93 Level 2 ports and 34 Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) ports. A detailed list of these locations is available on IDOT’s website.

This initiative is a part of Illinois’ broader strategy towards a sustainable future, highlighted by Gov. Pritzker’s 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, which aims for 100% clean energy in Illinois by 2045. Furthermore, IDOT is managing the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, with the first funding opportunity expected to be announced in early 2024.

Additionally, Gov. Pritzker recently announced that the Illinois Finance Authority will receive $14.9 million for new charging station constructions under the State of Illinois Community Charging Program. This will expand the charging network, particularly in disadvantaged communities, further supporting the state’s clean energy goals.
