East St. Louis, IL – An Illinois State Police (ISP) trooper’s vehicle was struck by a motorist on Interstate 64, marking the 10th Move Over Law-related crash in 2024.
According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred late Friday night, around 11:53 p.m., when a trooper’s squad car, stationed with emergency lights on for a previous incident near milepost 1.5 in St. Clair County, was hit by a Buick Lacrosse. The trooper, who was inside the vehicle at the time, suffered injuries and was later released from the hospital.Â
The Buick’s driver, identified as 55-year-old Billie Snively from Belleville, IL, was unharmed but faces multiple charges including DUI and failure to adhere to the Move Over Law. This law mandates drivers to shift lanes away from stationary emergency vehicles, aiming to protect law enforcement and emergency responders on duty.
Following a rise in Move Over Law-related crashes, with 23 in 2022 and 21 in 2023, ISP emphasizes the importance of this regulation to prevent such incidents and safeguard those on the frontline. Violations can result in significant fines and license suspensions, especially if they result in injuries.
