PEOTONE, Ill. – Residents awoke to the terrifying sound of a tornado late Friday night as it tore through southeastern Will County and northeastern Kankakee County.
The tornado, confirmed by meteorologists, touched down near Peotone and moved eastward at a relentless 45 mph. As it barreled through the region, it left a path of destruction in its wake. Eyewitness accounts described the aftermath as harrowing, with a portion of the roof torn off Frankfort Fire Station 3 on Route 45, and Rt. 114 in Momence resembling “a war zone.” Multiple homes were damaged, and several trees were uprooted in Beecher. Car damage was also reported. As of 9 a.m., no injuries have been reported.
At 11:28 pm, north of Kankakee and southeast of Peotone, the tornado’s presence was confirmed, and the warning remained in effect as it headed towards the Illinois/Indiana State Line. Residents were urged to find sturdy shelter immediately, avoiding windows to protect themselves from flying debris.
The tornado’s force was likened to that of a freight train, making its way through the area swiftly and causing widespread destruction. As authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage, residents are urged to remain vigilant for further updates and safety instructions.
