East Chicago, IN – A highly anticipated public meeting, scheduled for Thursday to discuss the permit renewal for BP Products North America Inc., took a sudden turn when the School City of East Chicago decided to cancel the event amid rising tensions over media access.

The meeting, planned at the East Chicago Central High School Auditorium, was expected to attract a large crowd, prompting the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Office of Air Quality to request a police presence.

According to East Chicago Police Department Chief Jose L. Rivera Jr., the department was prepared to ensure order and safety at the gathering. However, the situation escalated when the School City of East Chicago’s security staff informed the police that media personnel were not allowed at the public meeting. The police department, advocating for media rights in a public setting, advised the school’s security to reconsider their stance and consult their legal team.

Despite these efforts, the School City of East Chicago ultimately chose to cancel the meeting, leaving many questions unanswered. The reason behind the initial decision to bar media from attending the meeting remains undisclosed. The abrupt cancellation has not only raised concerns about transparency and public participation in crucial local environmental issues but also added to the growing unease among residents following recent events at the BP Refinery. The community’s need for clear and open communication is more pressing than ever, as this incident highlights the complex relationship between local industries, public officials, and the residents of East Chicago.
