Kankakee County Schools Adapt to Winter Weather: Closures, Remote Learning Plans

Kankakee County, IL – School districts in Kankakee County are adapting to the severe winter weather in various ways, with some opting for early dismissals and others for remote learning on January 12, 2024.

Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53 – CLOSED, E-Learning Day

Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School (BBCHS) – Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School (BBCHS) will not be in session on January 12, 2024. This change from the previously scheduled early release day is in response to the morning’s weather evaluation. The school confirms there will be no virtual or remote learning activities, and the day will be made up at the end of the year. All activities and athletic practices/games are also canceled.

Bradley School District 61 plans an early dismissal on January 12, with Bradley Central at 1:30 pm, Bradley East at 2:00 pm, and Bradley West at 2:30 pm. PreK (PM) students will have a Zoom session with their teachers. Lunch will be served before dismissal, and the status of after-school activities will be communicated separately. Dr. Goselin, the superintendent, mentions that if the weather worsens overnight, they may switch to an e-learning day.

Herscher CUSD 2 has declared an E-Learning Day for all students on January 12. Resources for students and parents are available on the district’s E-Learning webpage, and attendance links have been provided for grades K-8.

Kankakee Community College – Kankakee Community College (KCC) has announced the cancellation of classes and closure of facilities and extension sites on January 12, 2024, due to inclement weather. Students are advised to check Canvas for assignments or instructions from professors.

Kankakee Area Career Center – CLOSED

Kankakee School District 111 has announced a transition to virtual learning for Friday, January 12th. The district sent out a clear and informative announcement, indicating that students will learn remotely, with no in-person classes due to the anticipated snow and frigid temperatures. Parents and students are instructed to check their emails for detailed information regarding assignments. 

Kankakee Trinity Academy – Kankakee Trinity Academy will be closed on January 12, 2024, due to the severe weather conditions predicted in the area. The school prioritizes the safety of its students and staff in the face of the impending inclement weather.

Manteno CUSD 5 has also declared January 12 a remote learning day, citing safety concerns for bus drivers, staff, and the district community. Live instruction will occur via Google Meet from 9:30 am to 12 pm.

St Anne Grade School #256 – St. Anne Grade School in Kankakee County has announced an early dismissal for January 12, 2024. Bus riders will be dismissed at 1:50 p.m., and town students at 2:00 p.m. This precautionary measure is due to forecasts of snow changing to rain, with temperatures dropping below freezing by late afternoon. The school is prioritizing the safety of students, staff, and bus drivers. Any further changes regarding early release or cancellation will be communicated promptly.

St. Paul Lutheran School in Bourbonnais – St. Paul Lutheran School in Bourbonnais will remain closed on January 12, 2024. The decision is in response to the anticipated severe weather conditions, ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.

These measures reflect the county’s commitment to student safety while ensuring continuity of education during severe weather events.
