KANKAKEE, IL – Early Thursday morning, the City of Kankakee’s innovative ShotSpotter system sprang into action, directing the Kankakee Police Department to the 800 block of North Schuyler Avenue. Responding swiftly, officers arrived at the scene to investigate a gunshot, thankfully without any reported injuries or damage.

Upon arrival, officers encountered two individuals walking in the area. As they conducted a search, their efforts revealed a startling discovery – a handgun in the possession of 19-year-old Anthony C. Martinez of Bradley. Officers reportedly found two partially loaded magazines and loose rounds in Martinez’s possession.

Martinez now faces serious charges, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge, and possession of a firearm without a FOID card (Firearm Owner’s Identification).

His companion, however, was released without charges. Martinez is being held at the Jerome Combs Detention Center, awaiting a bond hearing that will determine his immediate future.
