Lake County, IL – Drivers across Lake County are being urged to slow down and stay alert as road construction season begins and Work Zone Awareness Week is recognized statewide.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the annual campaign serves as a reminder for motorists to use extra caution when traveling through active construction zones. Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. emphasized the importance of safe driving habits as crews return to roadways across the region.
Work zones often involve lane shifts, reduced speeds, and workers positioned close to moving traffic. Officials say distracted driving, speeding, and failure to follow posted signage are among the leading causes of crashes in these areas.
The awareness week is part of a broader national effort to reduce injuries and fatalities involving both road workers and drivers. Law enforcement agencies across Illinois typically increase messaging—and in some cases enforcement—during this period to encourage compliance with traffic laws in construction zones.
With warmer weather bringing an increase in roadwork projects throughout Lake County, as well as the greater Chicago metro area, officials are asking drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and remain vigilant behind the wheel.
Authorities stress that even small adjustments—like reducing speed and eliminating distractions—can significantly improve safety for everyone on the road.
