Hammond, IN – A catastrophic collision on I-80/94 eastbound, involving three semi-trucks and a passenger vehicle, has resulted in fatal consequences this afternoon near the Columbia Ave. overpass.
The incident unfolded around 1:25 p.m. when a semi-truck decelerating in traffic was hit from behind by another semi, leading to a Kia Sorento SUV being crushed under the trailer of the first semi. A third semi was also involved in the aftermath of the initial collision.
Tragically, a passenger in the Kia was declared deceased at the scene. Additionally, the driver and a child passenger of the Kia have been hospitalized with injuries that could be life-threatening.
The identity of the deceased will be disclosed by the Lake County Coroner’s Office after family notification. Authorities are diligently investigating the cause of the multi-vehicle accident, which has significantly impacted traffic and prompted an extensive response from emergency services.
