Schererville, IN – Drivers in Lake County should prepare for significant delays next week as a major stretch of U.S. 30 is set to close for railroad work near the Indiana-Illinois border.

According to INDOT Northwest, CSX Railroad plans to close all lanes of U.S. 30 between Hart Street and Calumet Avenue beginning on or after Monday, April 27, 2026. The closure is expected to last approximately six days while crews complete repairs at the railroad crossing.

Officials say the shutdown will be limited to the crossing area, with local access maintained up to that point. However, through traffic will not be permitted, and drivers are strongly encouraged to use designated detour routes.

The detour will direct traffic along U.S. 41/Indianapolis Boulevard, 45th Street/Glenwood Lansing Road, and Illinois Route 83. The closure impacts a heavily traveled corridor connecting Schererville, Dyer, and surrounding northwest Indiana communities within the greater Chicago metro area.

Transportation officials warn that delays are likely, particularly during peak travel times, and recommend planning alternate routes in advance.

The project is part of ongoing railroad maintenance aimed at improving safety and infrastructure at the crossing.

Drivers are advised to stay alert for signage and changing traffic patterns as work begins. Updates will be provided if timelines shift due to weather or construction conditions.
