SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – House Assistant Minority Leader Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee) has introduced House Joint Resolution 15 to designate the 315 Overpass on Interstate 57 as the “Sergeant Marlene R. Rittmanic Memorial Highway” to honor the life and sacrifice of fallen Bradley Police Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic.

Sergeant Rittmanic tragically lost her life in the line of duty on December 30th, 2021 while investigating a noise complaint at a Bourbonnais hotel with another officer.

“Our police officers put their lives in danger with every shift and every call, and Sergeant Rittmanic’s horrific death reminds us of these dangers and the courage of the men and women in blue,” said Rep. Haas. “By designating the overpass near the site of where her life was taken, we honor her heroism for Bradley and the surrounding Kankakee-Bourbonnais area where she worked to serve and protect; as well as for our state. All who drive and pass its designation will be reminded of the sacrifice police officers and their families make for the safety of our communities.”

On Tuesday, the resolution passed the House Transportation: Regulation, Roads, & Bridges Committee with unanimous and bipartisan support, reflecting the deep respect and appreciation for the brave men and women who serve and protect their communities. This designation will serve as a lasting tribute to Sergeant Rittmanic’s dedication, service, and sacrifice, and as a reminder of the risks that police officers face every day in the line of duty.

Sergeant Rittmanic’s legacy will live on through the “Sergeant Marlene R. Rittmanic Memorial Highway,” as motorists passing through the overpass will be reminded of her heroism and the sacrifices made by police officers and their families. This designation serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers confront while protecting and serving their communities, and as a gesture of gratitude for their unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe.

The resolution now moves to the House floor for further consideration, with widespread support anticipated. As Illinois pays tribute to the memory of Sergeant Rittmanic, her legacy of bravery and sacrifice will continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps in serving and protecting their communities.
