Effingham, IL – A distress call reporting a stolen vehicle and a fear of being followed led to a bizarre chain of events on I-57, resulting in the arrest of 34-year-old Kevin Herwig from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

According to Illinois State Police, officers received an anxious call from Herwig Wednesday afternoon, as he drove along I-57. Claiming that he was being pursued, Herwig told troopers on the call the car he was driving had been stolen.

Responding promptly to the alarming situation, an officer arrived at the scene and approached Herwig. Upon investigation, no evidence of a chase could be found.  It was later revealed that the vehicle had in fact been reported stolen earlier that day, not far from where Herwig had made his frantic call, in Effingham.

After a thorough examination and a medical check-up at the hospital, Herwig was cleared for release. However, his ordeal was far from over, as authorities took him into custody for the possession of the stolen vehicle.
