St. Charles, IL – The St. Charles Police Department is rallying the community to support one of their own, retired police officer Chris Grove, who is courageously battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. With a fundraising goal of $40,000, a total of $9,215 has been raised so far on Chris’ GoFundMe page.

Having served with the St. Charles Police Department for an impressive 25 years, Chris retired in December of 2021, looking forward to a fulfilling retirement in Lasalle, IL. His plans included caring for his mother and cherishing moments with his numerous nephews and nieces, while cruising the Illinois River on his beloved pontoon boat. Known for his love of the White Sox, Jimmy Buffet, and Big Elvis, Chris often found solace and laughter at the South Shore Boat Club, surrounded by friends and sharing a few Miller Lites.

However, this vibrant retirement took an unexpected turn earlier this year when Chris was diagnosed with ALS, a degenerative neurological disease that gradually leads to paralysis.

Despite the challenges, Chris bravely reached out to his friends, who have since shown unwavering support and a desire to help him in his battle. Chris’ family, including his mother Gerry and siblings Jeff and Jenny, have been pillars of strength throughout this journey and continue to stand by his side.

The funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will be crucial in providing relief and necessary resources for Chris and his family as they navigate the daunting realities of this devastating condition. Chris requires a wheelchair-converted van and modifications to his home to ensure everyday tasks can be managed with ease. The financial burden of ALS is significant, with direct costs including medical testing, copays, medications, and at-home care, as well as indirect costs like travel expenses, home renovations, and loss of income due to caregiving. On average, a patient with ALS can expect to face out-of-pocket expenses ranging from $100,000 to $200,000.

David Ketelsen, who is organizing the fundraiser on behalf of Christopher Grove, expressed the importance of community support in this challenging time. The St. Charles Police Department echoes this sentiment, calling on the public to contribute and share the fundraiser widely.

By joining forces, the St. Charles community can provide hope, strength, and comfort to Chris and his family, showing gratitude for his 25 years of dedicated service in protecting and serving the town. Let us stand together and make a difference in the life of a retired police officer who has selflessly devoted himself to safeguarding our community.
