Braidwood Police Make Arrest in Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking Case

BRAIDWOOD – A man has been arrested in connection with an aggravated vehicular hijacking incident that occurred on March 10, 2023, near Coal City Road and Interstate 55. 

The Braidwood Police Department arrested Jamiyah Johnson, a resident of Chicago, obtained through an arrest warrant for Johnson, and he was subsequently taken into custody by the department, along with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, ProAct Unit, and IDOC Parole Agents.

According to Braidwood Police, a witness reported an argument between Johnson and a female passenger before the victim exited the vehicle and Johnson brandished a firearm, putting it to the victim’s head and forcing her to drive. After a short distance, Johnson told the victim to exit the vehicle at gunpoint and fled the scene. The vehicle was later found unoccupied in the 6800 block of South Paxton in Chicago.

Over the next 48 hours, several witnesses were interviewed, and Johnson was positively identified as the suspect in the case. Johnson, who is currently on parole for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed habitual criminal, aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and aggravated unlawful restraint. A Will County Circuit Judge set bond at $2.5 million.

Braidwood Investigations, along with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, ProAct Unit, and IDOC Parole Agents, located Johnson in the 6800 block of South Paxton and took him into custody without incident on March 12, 2023, at approximately 2:19 pm. Johnson was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Detective Sergeant Chris Altiery, who worked diligently on the case, received praise from the Braidwood Police Department Chief. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Braidwood Police Department.
