Lockport, IL – The Gaylord Building Historic Site in Lockport has earned two statewide honors from the Illinois Association of Museums, recognizing its recent work in exhibit design and community engagement.
According to the Illinois Association of Museums, the site received an Award of Excellence for its 2025 exhibit, 50 Years to Overnight Success: The Story of the Lockport National Historic District, 1975–2025, along with an Innovation Award for its ongoing Story Wall initiative.
Officials say the award-winning exhibit highlighted how historic preservation transformed downtown Lockport over the past five decades. The display featured large-scale pen-and-ink artwork by local architect and artist Bob Morris, along with immersive elements such as wall murals and a painted floor map designed to engage visitors.
The exhibit was developed through a collaboration between Gaylord Building staff and Morris, with additional design support from Lockport Mayor Steven Streit. While the exhibit is no longer on display, museum officials say the recognition reflects its lasting impact on visitors and the community.
The second award recognized the Story Wall, a flexible micro-exhibit space داخل the building’s first-floor gallery. According to organizers, the rotating feature allows for smaller, short-term exhibits highlighting local history, student work, and unique research that may not fit into larger installations.
Since launching, the Story Wall has featured topics ranging from early 20th-century photography to local abolitionist history, helping expand community involvement and storytelling opportunities.
Museum leaders say the awards reflect the site’s growing role in public history and its commitment to creative, community-focused programming.
The Gaylord Building Historic Site, owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, continues to offer exhibits and programs focused on the Illinois & Michigan Canal Corridor and regional history.
