Major I-55 Collision Involving Overturned Semi Shuts Down Northbound Lanes, Critical Injuries

Wilmington, IL – A severe multi-vehicle collision involving four semis, one overturned, and several cars occurred on Interstate 55 northbound near Wilmington, resulting in at least one fatality and three critical injuries. 

The incident, reported just after 9 PM on Friday, led to an escalated response, including a Lifestar helicopter. According to emergency services, the accident occurred near mile marker 231 between Gardner and Braceville, causing significant disruptions.

An earlier accident was reported near the 229 mile marker in Gardner, leading to the closure of I-55 northbound. This series of accidents has caused ongoing traffic issues and emergency responses. The situation remains dynamic as emergency crews work to manage the scene and provide aid to those affected. 

Travelers are advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays in the area. The cause of the accident is under investigation, and further updates are expected as information becomes available.
