Minneapolis, Minnesota – Drivers and outdoor workers across Minnesota will feel a rapid warm-up Wednesday, with highs pushing 90°F before storms move in by Thursday evening, raising the risk for lightning delays and slick road conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, breezy and dry conditions Wednesday will give way to a developing system by Thursday afternoon, bringing scattered thunderstorms across central and eastern Minnesota. A few storms may turn severe, with damaging wind gusts over 50 mph and small hail possible during the evening commute.

Across the Twin Cities metro, temperatures climb from the mid-70s early Wednesday to near 90°F by late afternoon, increasing fire risks in dry grasses west of I-35. DOT officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose outdoor items ahead of Thursday’s storms.

By Thursday between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., storms could impact major corridors including I-94, I-35W, and Highway 169, reducing visibility and slowing traffic. Minnesota may see earlier storm development, while eastern areas face heavier rainfall bursts.

Cooler air settles in by Friday, dropping highs into the 50s and 60s, with calmer conditions heading into the weekend. Additional advisories could be issued if storm strength increases Thursday.
