Palos Park, IL – As Valentine’s Day approaches, the Palos Park Police Department (PPPD) is warning residents of a sophisticated romance scam.

According to PPPD, victims are initially contacted through dating websites and later threatened by scammers posing as law enforcement officers. The scam involves demands for money to avoid bogus criminal charges.

The scammers use convincing tactics, including directing victims to call a seemingly legitimate phone number and impersonating parents of the person met on the dating site.

The PPPD emphasizes that government agencies never demand money over phone or email and advises residents to hang up on such calls. This alert serves as a crucial reminder for online daters to remain vigilant against such deceptive schemes.
