Portage, IN – A startling discovery of live explosives in a Portage apartment building led to an urgent response from local authorities on Thursday morning. The Portage Police Department was alerted around 11:50 am to the presence of these dangerous items in the 5800 block of Creekview Court. A family, while sorting through a deceased relative’s belongings, found the military ordnance and promptly reported it.

Upon confirmation of the live explosives, officers evacuated the building to ensure public safety. The Porter County Bomb Squad was swiftly called to the scene and successfully removed the explosives for safe disposal. The situation was resolved by 2:15 pm, allowing residents to safely return to their homes.

The police commended the reporting family for their quick action, highlighting the importance of community vigilance in such scenarios. They also issued a reminder: if anyone encounters what appears to be explosive devices, they should not approach or handle them, but instead move to a safe distance and immediately contact emergency services.
