The Illinois State Library opens its doors to the poetic prowess of Illinois residents with the 20th Annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition, Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award. Celebrating the legacy of the legendary poet laureate, the competition seeks to discover and nurture new voices in poetry. With a deadline of June 30, 2024, entrants vie for cash prizes and the honor of being published in esteemed Illinois journals and magazines.

Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias invites poets 18 and older to participate, highlighting the event as a tribute to the state’s literary heritage and a stepping stone for emerging talent.
