Springfield, IL – The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association has publicly opposed the recently introduced House Bill 5560/Senate Bill 3472, which proposes extensive amendments to the Illinois Vehicle Code targeting law enforcement profiling practices.
The legislation, sponsored by Representative Marcus C. Evans, Jr. and Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr., seeks to establish actionable offenses against the state for profiling-related injuries and would compel law enforcement agencies to overhaul their policies.
According to the bill’s provisions, agencies would need to integrate profiling topics into training, set up protocols for profiling complaints, and adhere to the Racial Profiling Prevention and Data Oversight Board’s model policies. The bill also mandates the collection of data in line with the Racial Profiling Prevention and Data Oversight Act and the cessation of any practices that could enable profiling.
The Association’s dissent highlights a potential conflict between law enforcement perspectives and legislative efforts to address community concerns over profiling. Further details and the full text of the bill are accessible through the Illinois General Assembly’s website.
