Richmond, VA – Dry air and gusty winds will increase the risk of rapidly spreading fires across much of Virginia by late morning today, creating immediate concerns for outdoor activities and travel near open fields.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, northwest winds will increase through late morning Monday, with sustained speeds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts reaching 20 to 25 mph. At the same time, relative humidity will drop low enough to dry out vegetation quickly, especially across central and eastern Virginia.
The highest risk stretches along major corridors including I-95, I-64, and I-85, impacting cities such as Richmond, Petersburg, Williamsburg, and Norfolk. Dry ground conditions combined with wind could allow fires to spread quickly if ignited, particularly in rural and wooded areas.
Temperatures today will reach the upper 50s to mid-60s, but cooler air returns overnight. Inland areas could see lows drop to 29–39°F late Monday night into early Tuesday, raising the potential for patchy frost away from the immediate coast.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and secure equipment that could create sparks. Fire danger will remain elevated through early evening before winds diminish. Additional advisories may be issued if dry conditions persist into Tuesday.
