Joliet, IL – In recognition of National Slam the Scam Day, authorities across the state are raising awareness about the surge in government imposter scams.

According to the Social Security Office’s recent scam alert, residents are advised to be wary of fake government agents who may promise prizes or issue threats to extort money or personal information. The alert emphasizes not to engage with or pay scammers, and stresses the importance of reporting any suspicious activities to the Social Security Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

Educational resources, such as the Scam Alert fact sheet, have been made available by the Social Security Administration to assist the public in identifying scam attempts. Will County citizens are encouraged to educate themselves and their communities about these fraudulent tactics by sharing the fact sheet and using the #SlamTheScam hashtag on social media. To report scams to the OIG, visit secure.ssa.gov/ipff/home.

Awareness and prompt reporting are key in protecting individuals and their loved ones from potential financial harm and privacy breaches due to scams.
