JOLIET – A crash Tuesday morning claimed the life of a Crete man.

According to Joliet police, it happened at the intersection of East Cass Street and North Briggs Street at 10:22 am.  Officers responding reported a 23-year-old woman had failed to stop at a red light, which resulted in her car hitting the passenger’s side of a vehicle driven by 48-year-old Roman Romero-Velasquez of Crete.

Romero-Velasquez had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.  The Will County Coroner reports Romero-Velasquez died from injuries from the crash at 10:53 am.  A full autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Two other passengers in Romero-Velasquez’s vehicle were also transported to Silver Cross with non-life-threatening injuries.

The intersection remained closed in all directions for a time this morning while multiple ambulances and crews responded to the scene. No citations have been reported as the crash remains under investigation by Joliet Police.
