Herscher Mayor Ray Schneider is asking Gov. Pritzker to activate a Disaster Declaration from the State of Illinois due to recent flooding in the Village.

The Mayor wrote the letter after a result of eight inches fell in the Village in just four days.

The flooding has caused “serious damage to the public facilities in the Village” the Mayor said in his letter, sent out earlier today.  Among the damage listed included extensive damage to the Village of Herscher’s Sewage Treatment Plant along with the destruction of pumps.  The letter also mentions damaged caused to a number of residences throughout the Village.

The Mayor is seeking aid through any agencies that can assist, including State of Illinois EPA, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Illinois Department of Public Health, or any other agency which can provide assistance to the Village.

Earlier today, Gov. Pritzker announced 60 National Guardsmen had been activated for assistance in Grundy, Pike, Scott, and Morgan Counties in their fight against floods.

RE: Flooding of the Village of Herscher

Dear Governor Pritzker:

You may be aware of the serious conditions in our village resulting from severe flooding which has occurred in the Village of Herscher as a result of rainfall over eight inches in a period of four days.

The flooding, which occurred as a result of this excessive rainfall, has caused serious damage to the public facilities in the Village.  Substantial damage has occurred to a large holding tank at the Village of Herscher Sanitary Sewage Treatment Plant; damage to the Village of Herscher Sewer Collection System, including the destruction of pumps.

More importantly, the flooding has caused severe damage to a number of residences in the Village of Herscher, causing houses to be flooded which caused the evacuation of many of those residences.  The flooding caused damages to those residences, personal property to be lost and serious economic damage to those residents.

It is our request that you take any necessary action to activate a Disaster Declaration from the State of Illinois, if possible, or at minimum, to activate any assistance which may be provided to the Village of Herscher through the State of Illinois EPA, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Illinois Department of Public Health, or any other agency which can provide assistance to the Village.

We will appreciate any and all assistance which can be provided to our Village.

Sincerely yours,

Ray Schneider, Mayor
