KANKAKEE, IL – In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded last Wednesday, a dog named Tillie found herself seeking refuge under a chicken coop after her owners requested her to be shot due to a hurt leg.

The Kankakee County Humane Foundation (KCHF), a local animal rescue organization, came to Tillie’s aid and provided her with a new lease on life.

The shocking revelation came when a gentleman, who had collaborated with KCHF previously to remove dogs from distressed properties, informed the organization about the distressing request. Determined to save Tillie, the KCHF director accompanied the man to the property, which proved to be a haven for neglect.

Tillie was discovered curled up under the chicken coop, seeking solace in a pit of sand. With great effort, the caring team managed to free her from her hiding spot and transported her to safety. She was immediately taken to 4 Paws Pet Clinic, where X-rays revealed a harrowing truth.

Not only had Tillie been shot, but pellets were found lodged in all four of her limbs. The severity of her wounds was compounded by deep infections and over 100 ticks that had taken refuge on her body. Additionally, Tillie tested positive for heartworm, adding to her list of medical challenges.

Tillie’s case was not a planned intake for KCHF, and finding space for her proved challenging. However, the compassionate organization made a resolute decision to provide her with the necessary veterinary care, pain management, and a chance at saving her leg.

In response to this urgent situation, KCHF is calling on the community for support. Donations are being accepted to cover Tillie’s medical expenses and ongoing care. Whether it’s a small contribution or sharing her story, every effort counts in helping Tillie receive the life-saving care she deserves.

The plight of Tillie serves as a stark reminder of the need for responsible pet ownership and the vital role played by organizations like KCHF in rescuing and rehabilitating animals in distress. Together, we can say “yes” to Tillie and provide her with a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
