MOUNT VERNON, IL – Illinois State Police have launched an investigation into the sudden death of a 27-year-old Waltonville man, Jacob A. Hunsell, while in custody at the Jefferson County Jail early Wednesday morning.
According to Sheriff’s Department officials the event unfolded at around 3:14 am when jail staff discovered Hunsell unresponsive after an apparent self-harm attempt. Correctional officers, along with other jail personnel, responded swiftly in an attempt to provide immediate aid. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were promptly called to the scene.
Upon their arrival, EMS personnel took over the emergency response, but despite their efforts, Hunsell was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to Crossroads Hospital’s Emergency Room.
The Illinois State Police, following standard procedures for in-custody deaths, are now leading a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the sequence of events leading to Hunsell’s death, while Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a parallel administrative review.
