LAKE VILLA, IL — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Craig B. Muzard, 74, from unincorporated Crystal Lake, in connection with a fatal head-on collision in Lake Villa that claimed the life of 73-year-old George V. Giannakakis.
Muzard, residing on the 4000 block of Illinois Street, faces grave charges including Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Drugs Resulting in Death and Reckless Homicide, following the rigorous investigation by Lake County’s Traffic Crash Investigators.The tragic incident, which occurred on February 3, 2023, involved Muzard’s GMC Acadia veering into oncoming traffic on Route 59 and colliding head-on with Giannakakis’s Kia Sorento.
According to reports witnesses reported the GMC swerving before the crash, leading to speculation about impairment. Both drivers were critically injured and transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where Giannakakis was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg commented on the tragedy, stating, “The tragic death of Mr. Giannakakis is another sad example of someone being killed by the reckless actions of another.”
Muzard, arrested on the morning of December 20th at his residence without incident, remains held in the Lake County Jail pending his first court appearance.
