Gurnee, IL – A Gurnee Police Department detective was arrested and subsequently resigned on Saturday for retail theft.

According to Gurnee police reports the incident occurred at a store on the 6500 block of Grand Avenue, where Detective Antoine J. Smith, 32, of Round Lake, was reportedly caught under-ringing items at a self-checkout while off duty.

Under-ringing, a form of retail theft, involves scanning items at a price lower than their actual value or failing to scan them at all. This act is considered a criminal offense under Illinois law. Following an investigation adhering to departmental protocols, Smith, who had been with the department for four years, faced charges and resigned on the same day.

The Gurnee Police Department emphasized its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. Actions undermining these principles are addressed with significant and immediate measures to ensure community trust and safety.
