La Porte, IN – Indiana Man Dies in Jail Four Days After Being Booked on Probation Violation

La Porte, IN – The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the death of 27-year-old Colytn T. Nowatzke, who was found unresponsive in his cell at the La Porte County Jail. 

The incident occurred Tuesday morning around 8:00 AM when a fellow inmate notified jail staff of the emergency. Medical personnel and deputies responded promptly but were unable to revive him. 

Nowatzke was transported by EMS to Northwest Health – La Porte Campus, where he was later pronounced dead. 

Michigan City Police arrested Nowatzke on May 3 for a violation of probation, and he had been in custody since then. The criminal investigations division is handling the ongoing death investigation, with assistance from the La Porte County Coroner’s Office and the La Porte Fire Department. Further details are pending as the investigation continues.
