Bolingbrook, IL – A man originally suspected of a business theft is now facing attempted murder charges after allegedly firing shots at an Illinois police officer.
Victor Zarate, a 24-year-old resident of the 100 Block of West Briarcliff Road in Bolingbrook, has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, following the shooting incident that unfolded on August 20th.
The event began with a report of theft at a business located on the 100 Block of S. Bolingbrook Dr. at around 6:14 pm. The alleged offender, fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Approximately an hour later, at 7:48 pm, the same business was targeted again, this time with shots fired.
Upon locating the alleged offender, Victor Zarate, at his residence, a Bolingbrook Police Officer approached him. However, the situation escalated quickly as Zarate reportedly opened fire on the officer, striking the officer twice. The officer was subsequently rushed to an area hospital and is now expected to recover.
The incident prompted an intense standoff, leading to the involvement of the Illinois State Police Tactical Response Team. Victor Zarate was taken into custody without further incident during a carefully executed operation that included a search warrant.
Zarate is currently being held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility with a bond set at a staggering $5,000,000.00.
