DeKalb, IL – Northern Illinois University has identified an anonymous email as the source of the threat that targeted the university’s College of Business on Monday, February 26, 2024.

The email, received early in the morning, reportedly warned of a violent act intended to attract a large police presence and international media coverage. NIU authorities have noted this pattern is similar to incidents at other universities nationwide over the past year, designed to provoke SWAT responses and spread fear.

Despite the unsettling nature of the threat, NIU continues to operate normally, with classes proceeding as scheduled. The university’s administration is taking the threat seriously and has launched a full investigation.

In response to the potential risk, NIU is offering support and resources to its community, including the Center for Student Assistance, Counseling and Consultation Services, and the Employee Well-being program. Updates on the situation are expected to be provided to the NIU community later today.
