Hammond, IN – Following numerous odor complaints, the Hammond Fire Department has issued safety recommendations to the public, including the use of particulate masks.
According to firefighters the advisory comes in response to almost 50 odor-related calls received by the department, believed to be connected to the recent power outage and subsequent flaring at the BP Whiting Refinery.
Residents are advised to wear particulate masks when outdoors to prevent inhalation of dusts or particulates released into the air. Additionally, the department suggests replacing furnace air filters with high-quality options and checking them regularly until the situation is fully resolved.
