Dwight, IL – Inclement weather conditions have necessitated an extension of work at the Interstate 55 at Illinois 17 interchange, impacting traffic flow with scheduled closures into next week. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced an updated schedule for the necessary closures, beginning at 9 p.m. on Monday, April 8, and concluding at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, weather permitting.
According to IDOT, the closures are critical for the demolition of the north half of the Illinois 17 bridge over I-55. This operation will see Interstate 55 at the Illinois 17 interchange (exit 217) in Dwight closed for consecutive nights starting Monday, April 9, through Wednesday, April 10. Traffic will be rerouted off and back onto I-55 via the exit and entrance ramps at Illinois 17. Meanwhile, Illinois 17 will maintain one lane open in each direction on the south half of the bridge, with flaggers controlling traffic at intersections.
This work is part of a larger $9.1 million project aimed at replacing the Illinois 17 bridge over I-55, with completion expected in mid-fall. The project underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and infrastructure resilience in the region.
